What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping?

Tapping combines ancient Chinese acupressure with modern psychology and elements of neuro-linguistic programming (using your voice to rewire your brain). Tapping physically brings your nervous system into a place of balance. When we feel calm, it’s much easier to process our emotions, challenges, anxieties, fears, limiting beliefs or past trauma.

By tapping on specific meridian end points while focusing on a problem or emotion, you can:

How EFT Tapping Helps with Anxiety & Stress

Research proves that tapping reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and engages your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and relaxation). This is the opposite of the fight or flight response (sympathetic nervous system) that we go into, anytime we feel stressed of anxious.

Tapping sends a direct calming signal to your amygdala (brains fear response), which is why it’s so powerful at reducing anxiety. Clients often report feeling lighter, calmer and more empowered after just a few minutes.

The combination of tapping on the meridian points of your body and speaking to the reason(s) for your anxiety brings your mind and body into alignment. It reduces the automatic flow of anxious feelings when those memories get triggered by everyday life until it stops them altogether.

For London-based clients, I offer EFT for stress relief London, and for those across the UK or Worldwide, I provide Emotional Freedom Technique online sessions via Zoom.

EFT Tapping points on the body

Step-by-Step: How to Practice EFT Tapping

The basic Tapping technique requires you to focus on a negative emotion or specific problem at hand. This could be an anxiety, a negative belief, fear, phobia, worry or any difficult emotion or situation that you want to work on. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, you then use your fingertips to tap 5-7 times on 9 specific meridian points on the body. The image above shows you all the points.

The Tapping Process Explained

Step 1) Identify the issue you want to work on.

Step 2) Rate the emotional intensity of the feeling on a scale of 0 - 10.

Step 3) Tap on your karate chop and repeat the statements...

"Even though I have this (insert problem here)______________ , I love and accept myself anyway"

"Even though I have this (insert problem here)______________ , that's ok, i'm human"

"Even though I have this (insert problem here)______________ , I love my body and I love my mind, I’m open to the possibility of feeling different"

Step 4) Then move around the points of the body using language connected to the issue (e.g "this anxiety, this tension in my body, it's exhausting, its holds me back, why do i feel anxious..."

Step 5) After two rounds take a deep breath (in through nose out through mouth) and rate the intensity of the emotion

Step 6) Keep doing the rounds until your number has reduced. Use language that directly targets the problem and only move to positive affirmations when it has reduced.
