Authenticity at Work: Boost Confidence, Connection & Employee Wellbeing

Team members connecting and supporting each other, demonstrating a culture of workplace wellbeing

Creating a workplace where we feel safe to be ourselves isn’t just a nice-to-have - it’s essential for building healthy cultures, strong teams and resilient employees.

When we are authentic, three powerful things happen:

  • Our confidence grows

  • Our connections with colleagues deepen

  • Our overall wellbeing improves

What is Authenticity?

Authenticity simply means being genuine and real. It’s being who we are at our core, without feeling like we need to wear a mask or hide parts of ourselves to fit in. Authenticity plays a crucial role in our emotional wellbeing and resilience. When we feel pressure to adapt or mask ourselves, it creates internal tension, which can lead to stress, burnout and ultimately a disconnection from our sense of self.

By contrast, environments that support openness and trust allow us to feel grounded, confident, and connected to our work and colleagues.

When we feel able to be ourselves:

  • We connect more deeply with others

  • We become better allies because authentic people are trustworthy and honest

  • We feel more confident in our ideas and abilities

  • We reduce stress and anxiety because we’re not constantly monitoring ourselves

  • We can contribute our perspective and ideas in meetings, problem-solve and come up with creative solutions

  • Authenticity benefits not just us, it positively impacts everyone around us

All of this cultivates a powerful internal feeling: belonging. When we feel that we belong, we become the best version of ourselves.

What Blocks Authenticity?

Two major factors often block authenticity: stress and the inner critic.

Stress

Chronic stress triggers our body’s fight-or-flight response (sympathetic nervous system). When this happens:

  • Our thinking brain becomes less active

  • We react instead of responding thoughtfully

  • Our inner critic grows louder

  • We don’t respond to people in ways that align with our authentic selves

Inner Critic

Many of us learn early in life that it may not feel safe to fully be ourselves. Our inner critic may say things like:

  • “You’re not good enough.”

  • “Don’t say that.”

  • “People will judge you.”

  • “You need to adapt to fit in.”

  • “Your voice isn’t important.”

To cope, we often wear a mask, trying to be what we think others expect. While masking can feel protective, it comes at a cost:

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Constant self-monitoring

  • Fear of failure

  • Anxiety and exhaustion

  • Feeling disconnected from who we truly are

Reconnecting With Our Authentic Selves

Authenticity isn’t about changing who we are, it’s about reconnecting with our core selves.

Our core selves are:

  • Calm and grounded

  • Not defined by job titles, achievements, or external opinions

  • Free from limiting beliefs

  • Naturally worthy and connected

  • Feeling that we belong

When we reconnect with this part of ourselves, we often feel:

  • More aligned with our values

  • Confident in our abilities

  • Mentally stronger and resilient

  • Less reactive to external pressures

Three Practical Ways We Can Boost Authenticity and Wellbeing at Work

Step 1: Regulate Your Nervous System

Engaging your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and relxation) brings the thinking brain back online, allowing us to respond thoughtfully rather than react from stress.

Simple 60-Second Reset

Gently tap on your body while breathing:

  • Inner Eyebrow – inhale through nose

  • Outer Eyebrow – exhale slowly through mouth

  • Under Eye – inhale through nose

  • Under Nose – exhale slowly through mouth

  • Under Mouth – inhale through nose

  • Collarbone Point – exhale slowly

  • Under Arms – inhale through nose

  • Top of Head – exhale slowly through mouth

Repeat the affirmations:

  • I AM SAFE

  • I AM THE PRESENT MOMENT AND THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS

  • I CAN HANDLE WHATEVER COMES MY WAY

Step 2: Befriend Our Inner Critic

Speaking kindly to ourselves is a crucial part of authenticity. Recognizing our inner critic and its limiting beliefs is the first step in reconnecting with our core selves — allowing us to reach our full potential.

Step 3: Don’t Forget to Breathe

Diaphragmatic (belly) breathing engages our parasympathetic nervous system, supporting relaxation and emotional regulation.

When to Practice:

  • Before and during important meetings

  • Ahead of presentations or pitches

  • During high-pressure moments or tight deadlines

  • After challenging conversations

Even a few conscious breaths can help us reconnect with our calm, grounded selves.
